This first of a kind event in India has been announced with the launch of the unofficial website at http://bangalore-ultra.blogspot.com/. The event is planned to be held on Dec 16th, 2007. Given the way these guys are planning for the event, and their professional approach... I have no doubts that this would be a big success. The event is planned to have 25K, 50K and 80K runs. By definition, any distance upwards 50K is classified as an "ultra".
Now that marathons are fast becoming the new fitness mantra in the country, particularly in the metros... I feel the "ultra" domain is the natural next step-up in this field. Events of these kinds are already popular worldwide, with runs of 50K, 50miles, 100K, 100miles, and more, and the rare species of ultra-marathon runners from India will find a new home in their own country.
Way to go guys! All the best for the event... maybe I might even turn up for the fun.

Organising a ultra marathon is going to be very difficult, I am sure the organisers have the passion. But it will take a lot more than that to actually make it a success. Given the fact that they are promoting it out of a blog, I am really worried about the financial resources they are able to raise for such a event.
But will wish him the best, I do plan to do a Ultra marathon some day, but given the weather in India, its going to be very difficult.
..... but given the weather in India, its going to be very difficult.
DIFFICULT, BUT NOT IMPOSSIBLE. BY THE WAY HOW MANY RUNNERS ARE LIKELY TO RUN IN THE LONGEST RACE. IS THERE ANY ONE YOU KNOW?
-Murari, UP
Not anyone I know specifically. But I am sure that the event is on, and should see the light of day in Dec.
Hey there people.. i know i'm responding to an older post.. but updates on the 1st Indian ultramarathon organized in Bangalore - website is up - www.bangaloreultra.com. And registrations are on. Unlike regular marathons, focus is on runners & their experience. If you are in Bangalore, you should check it out!
It surely is going to be a great start for a new passion for the long distance runners, those who want to go a long way...
Performance to watch out will be that of "Arun Bhardwaj - Alone ultra marathon man of India", and "Vikram Singh - The next big name u'll see in short time"... are working hard to make this sport recognized in India.
All the very best guys, great work !!!
Krish,
This is exciting to hear. I am sure Arun and Vikram will do very well in this event (i.e. the 78KM). Good to see ultra-running take of so well here in India. I am eagerly looking forward to Dec 16th, even though I am not running.
